WEIRD NEWS
You Stole What? - In Jensen Beach, Florida, police have arrested 33-year-old John Samuel Ricci for allegedly stealing -- are you ready for this -- communion wafers during a church service! Ricci was cornered by fellow churchgoers when he grabbed a handful of wafers from the priest during communion services Saturday. They held him down until the police arrived at the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Our thief was charged with two counts of simple battery, theft and disruption of a religious assembly. And he'll of course now go to hell! (myway.com)
You Stole What? Part Deux! - In the small Russian village of Komarovo, thieves have somehow managed to steal a 200-year-old church! No kidding. The Church of Christ's Resurrection was built in 1809 but in early October someone reportedly took it away brick by brick. Father Vitaly, a spokesman for the local Russian Orthodox Church, said, "We have sent a letter to local prosecutors and hope an investigation will tell us who did this." The church was in an isolated area only occasionally visited by clergymen, so the disappearance was not immediately noticed. A survey of the large, two-storey church a few months ago found that it was structurally sound, but now all that remains are the foundations and sections of walls. (Ananova)
Woman Dies After Being Struck By Her Dead Husband's Coffin! - This has got to be the strangest way to go of all time. In Brazil, 67-year-old Marciana Silva Barcelos and her family were on the way to a cemetery in the town of Alvorada to bury her dead husband. However, a careless driver managed to run into the hearse carrying the coffin and Mrs. Barcelos, who was sitting in the front passenger seat. The crash caused the coffin to slam into her head, killing her instantly! The driver of the hearse and Mrs. Barcelos' son, who was also in the car, were treated for minor injuries. (Ananova)
Missing Cat Returns Home After 13 Years! - Back in 1995, Melinda Merman and Frank Walburg's cat, George, went missing in Santa Rosa, California. Melinda said she visited animal shelters and wrote to veterinarians in search of the gray, yellow-eyed cat that was equipped with a microchip implanted in his skin. But they never did find George until just this week when the manager of a mobile home park trapped the sickly feline and turned him into an animal shelter. They traced George back to his original owners who said he weighed half of what he used to. However, the cat is now eating well and displaying some of his old behavior, like jumping at flickering light on the wall the way he used to. (The Press Democrat)
Disturbing Prank - There are definitely some sick minds out there. In Caldwell, Idaho, Jennifer Keller and her 9-year-old daughter found a frozen pig head stuck on top of a pole next to a tree her yard. Police Sgt. Jim Watson said evidence suggests the head had been there just a few hours. Police are investigating but even if they catch the sicko who did this, the charge would be little more than a misdemeanor of disturbing the peace. (Idaho Press-Tribune)
More Not Ready For Prime Time Crime - In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, police say it wasn't exactly the most well thoughtout escape. A 32-year-old man stopped and handed over his license and registration at a sobriety checkpoint. But just after he did, he peeled out and sped away, almost hitting an officer. Police eventually pulled over the 32-year-old man and allegedly found marijuana in his vehicle. Our friend was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of drugs, disobeying a police officer and reckless conduct. (Portsmouth Herald)
No More Christmas Cards For You - In Beijing, one police chief probably won't be invited to many more family reunions. He arrested no less than 48 of his relatives, including brothers, cousins and a number of his wife's family, for various crimes. The police chief, who is in his 30s, personally arrested a brother and two cousins after finding they had beaten local teachers at a primary school while drunk. Other family members were arrested after stealing a woman's handbag. But his supreme sense of duty has inflamed other relatives, some of whom had taken turns threatening his parents, and had "even secretly cut off the tails and slashed the legs of their cows." (Reuters)
Batman Sues Batman - You probably didn't know this but in Turkey, there is actually a city named Batman -- and that city is now suing Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros for royalties from The Dark Knight. Husey in Kalkan, the mayor of Batman, has accused the Batman movie producers of using the city's name without permission. Kalkan said, "There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." The mayor also says the film's success has had a psychological impact on the city's inhabitants, which he blames for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate. So he's now gathering documentation he claims will show that the city of Batman predates the 1939 debut of the superhero in DC Comics. (Ananova)

JIMI HENDRIX DRUMMER MITCH MITCHELL DEAD AT 62 ..Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience was found dead on Wednesday (November 12th) in Portland, Oregon at age 62. KGW.com reports that an autopsy was conducted yesterday, but that the Multnomah County Medical Examiner's office said he likely died of natural causes.
Mitchell was on the road as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour, a 19-stop trek paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. The tour, which wrapped on November 7th, also featured the core band of Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Aerosmith's Brad Whitford, and Kid Rock guitar player Kenny Olson.
Janie Hendrix, Jimi's adopted sister and the CEO of Experience Hendrix, LLC said in a statement, "We're all devastated to hear of Mitch's passing. He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated. Over the course of the recent tour, he seemed delighted with the interchange with the other musicians and the audiences. There is no question that he was doing what he loved."
Between 1966 and 1970, Mitchell was Hendrix's closest collaborator playing in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and his later "Cry Of Love"-era Experience with bassist Billy Cox, and backed Hendrix at both his legendary performances at 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival and 1969's Woodstock.
Mitchell was featured on such seminal Hendrix albums as Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland. His work can be heard on many Hendrix classics including "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", "Foxy Lady", "Fire", "Little Wing", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Crosstown Traffic," "All Along the Watchtower" "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and dozens of others.
On December 10th, 1968 Mitchell drummed as part of the makeshift supergroup the Plastic Mac, featuring John Lennon, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton, which was formed for the taping of the Rolling Stones' Rock And Roll Circus TV special.
Experience bassist Noel Redding died in 2003 at the age of 57, due to complications stemming from cirrhosis of the liver.
Mitch Mitchell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He is survived by his mother, his wife, a daughter and two grandchildren.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS FUTURE IN LIMBO, SAYS SCOTT WEILAND ..The future of Stone Temple Pilots is up in the air because of legal difficulties with the band's record label, according to an interview with frontman Scott Weiland at MTV.com. Although the group reunited this year for a successful reunion tour, a lawsuit filed by Atlantic Records against Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz has halted any forward motion on recording a new album. Weiland explained, "Originally, I was told -- and I was told for years -- that we were free from Atlantic. I don't know how it is that Dean (DeLeo, guitarist) and Robert (DeLeo, bassist) are free from (Atlantic), and Eric and I are not. I have no interest in making a record for a major label. If we were going to make a record, I would want to do it in a way that was much more original and in a more creative fashion."
Weiland told us that he's looked at some other recent deals by big-name artists as a model for STP's future: "When we first talked about putting STP back together, it was do this tour and then see about doing a creative deal with another company, like an all-in deal. And, you know, if you look at even like Radiohead and a handful of other bands, they make more money doing things in an unconventional fashion as opposed to doing it, you know, with the major labels."
Atlantic Records filed suit against Weiland and Kretz last spring, saying that the pair tried to get out of their contract with the label and threatened to stop performing. The label wants STP to deliver at least one and possibly as many as three more albums.
Although the band has written material for a new STP record, Weiland said, "To make another record would mean another couple of years of my life dedicated to that, and I just don't know if that's where I see myself going."
The singer's second solo effort, Happy in Galoshes, comes out on November 25th, with Weiland launching a solo tour in January.
As for his parting with his previous band, Velvet Revolver, Weiland said, "Velvet Revolver fell apart because there were too many big egos in the band -- and I'm including myself. It wasn't necessarily about bad egos, just big egos, and unfortunately, it just mistakenly kind of eroded."
Weiland will perform on the November 21st edition of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the November 26th episode of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live.

BUSH REUNION POSSIBLE, SAYS GAVIN ROSSDALE ..Singer Gavin Rossdale says that the chances of a Bush reunion are "quite high," according to a new interview with Blender.com. Rossdale, who disbanded the group in 2002, said that his new solo album Wanderlust was initially going to be a Bush album, explaining, "Then the guitar player, Nigel (Pulsford), who originally was the one who didn't want to tour anymore, suddenly didn't want to leave his family. I understand. I think he felt that he missed his daughter growing up the first few years. It would have been a great year for Bush; it would have been a really good return. No one stole anyone's motorbike or wife, so it's always possible."
Bush recorded four albums, with its most successful being its 1994 debut, Sixteen Stone. The disc sold six million copies and featured the hits "Everything's Zen," "Glycerine," "Comedown," and "Machinehead."
Rossdale launched a new band called Institute in 2004, but its debut disc Distort Yourself was a commercial flop.
Wanderlust is the singer's first full-fledged solo effort and features a guest appearance from his wife, Gwen Stefani.
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS FRONTMAN'S LIFE STORY COMING TO HBO ..A television series based on the early life of Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis is being developed for HBO, according to Variety. The series, which Kiedis is working on with producers Marc Abrams and Michael Benson, is tentatively titled Scar Tissue. Although Kiedis' 2004 memoir had the same title, the series will focus on his childhood while the book was more about his experiences as a successful rock star with the Chili Peppers.
The producers are currently looking for a writer to tackle the pilot script. The series will reportedly be centered around Kiedis' relationship with his father, John, who was allegedly a drug dealer for acts like the Who and Led Zeppelin under his stage name, Blackie Dammett. The show will kick off with Kiedis moving from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he lived with his mother, to Los Angeles to join his dad.
Kiedis told Variety about his father, "He introduced me to the arts, to a more culturally magnificent life. But some of it was this heavy, adult matter that I wasn't quite capable of digesting... It was a very rich but kind of challenging period of my life. I was thrust into this adult mentality by age 11."
The show will take place in the West Hollywood and Los Angeles of the early Seventies.
Kiedis plans to be heavily involved with the show and has been gathering memories of their life together from his father, who now lives in Portland, Oregon. Kiedis may also make cameos in the show or possibly narrate it.
In other news, Chili Peppers bassist Flea and Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr will make guest appearances on The Empyrean, the latest solo effort from Chili Peppers axeman John Frusciante. The record is due for release on January 20th. This is Frusciante's seventh solo offering since he rejoined the Chili Peppers 10 years ago.
The Chili Peppers have been on a hiatus of undetermined length following heavy touring and promotional efforts for its 2006 album, Stadium Arcadium.
'ROLLING STONE' LISTS TOP 100 GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME ..Rolling Stone.com has posted the "The 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time," and enlisted the help of rock legends including Billy Joel, Bono, Robert Plant, Jackson Browne, Iggy Pop, James Taylor, Melissa Etheridge and others to comment on the top picks, which span the past six decades.
The Top 25 Greatest Voices according to Rolling Stone:
1. Aretha Franklin
2. Ray Charles
3. Elvis Presley
4. Sam Cooke
5. John Lennon
6. Marvin Gaye
7. Bob Dylan
8. Otis Redding
9. Stevie Wonder
10. James Brown
11. Paul McCartney
12. Little Richard
13. Roy Orbison
14. Al Green
15. Robert Plant
16. Mick Jagger
17. Tina Turner
18. Freddie Mercury
19. Bob Marley
20. Smokey Robinson
21. Johnny Cash
22. Etta James
23. David Bowie
24. Van Morrison
25. Michael Jackson
Among the notable comments:
Robert Plant on Elvis Presley: "'Anyway You Want Me' is one of the most moving vocal performances I've ever heard. There is no touching 'Jailhouse Rock' and the stuff recorded at the King Creole sessions. I can study the Sun Sessions as a middle-aged guy looking back at a bloke's career and go, 'Wow, what a great way to start.' But I liked the modernity of the RCA stuff. 'I Need Your Love Tonight' and 'A Big Hunk O' Love' were so powerful -- those sessions sounded like the greatest place to be on the planet."
Billy Joel on Ray Charles: "Ray synthesized the blues into a language everybody could relate to. You can't listen to Ray Charles and not say, 'This is a man who felt deeply, who has lived this music.' He shows you his humanity. The spontaneity is evident. Another guy might say, 'That was a mistake, we can't leave that in.' No, Ray left it in. The mistake became the hook."
Jackson Browne on John Lennon: "He didn't sing very loud. I got that sense when I was learning 'Oh My Love' on Imagine. That song has to be done quietly, which turns out to be a feat of strength. It's ironic -- to sing high and quiet, you have to be physically strong... These songs live in you because of the remarkable facility of the singer to inhabit those moments and portray them... He inhabits that idea... It's wonderful to have an idea expressed so well that everybody can sing it."
Jackson Browne, who's gone on to collaborate and become friends with Bob Dylan, recalled the first time he ever saw and heard him: "When I first heard Bob Dylan, I was walking through my living room and I was probably about 12. And there was this goofy guy sitting there on the edge of a stage singing... and a couple of years later I really got into him. But I was looking at him, it was this afternoon TV program that my dad... and I stood there and said, 'Wow, what's that?' And he said, 'That is the real deal. That right there -- I knew guys in the army that sounded just like that. Whoever he is, that's like really genuine. All kinds of people in this country sing just like he's singing right now.'"
James Taylor on Paul McCartney: "Paul is like an impressionist painter. The pieces of his music are so elementary, yet the overall thing is so sophisticated. He's such a precise and controlled singer. People chose Lennon or McCartney. I was definitely on the McCartney side. He makes a beautiful sound."
Lenny Kravitz on Mick Jagger: "His sense of pitch and melody is really sophisticated. His vocals are stunning, flawless in their own kind of perfection. There are certain songs where he just becomes a different person. Take 'Angie': I've never heard that tone from him since, and it wasn't there before. And I love when he sings falsetto, like on 'Emotional Rescue' or 'Fool to Cry.'"
Alison Krauss on Robert Plant: "His voice is picturesque. It sounds so new and so old at the same time, with this crazy European mystery to it."
Melissa Etheridge on Janis Joplin: "She was shaking that shake that she did, and was screaming. I'd never seen anything like it. She would just kinda sing and scream and cry and she'd sound like an old black woman -- which is exactly what she was trying to sound like."
Art Garfunkel on Brian Wilson: "(His voice is) this unique, crazy creation, a mix of rock & roll and heartfelt prayer."
Randy Jackson on Steve Perry: "Other than Robert Plant, there's no singer in rock that even came close to Steve Perry. The power, the range, the tone -- he created his own style. He mixed a little Motown, a little Everly Brothers, a little Zeppelin."
Sebastian Bach on Axl Rose: "Axl sings the most beautiful melodies with the most aggressive tones and the most outrageous, freakish range. There's maybe five people in the world that can sing in his range."

PAUL McCARTNEY INSISTS THAT 'ELEANOR RIGBY' CHARACTER IS FICTIONAL…Paul McCartney is officially denying that a 1911 pay slip containing the name "Eleanor Rigby," which was supposedly donated by him to charity, either belonged to him, or served as the inspiration for the Beatles' 1966 classic. The pay slip bearing Rigby's name comes from City Hospital in Liverpool.
AFP reported that McCartney made a statement stating, "Eleanor Rigby' is a totally fictitious character that I made up. If someone wants to spend money buying a document to prove a fictitious character exists, that's fine with me."
Anne Mawson, who is the chief executive of the Sunbeams Music Trust charity, plans to auction off the pay slip for $750,000 on November 27th to aid children with special needs. Mawson claimed that she received the pay slip from McCartney himself in 1990 after asking him to donate to the charity: "One day in the post came a brown envelope with a Paul McCartney world tour stamp, nine months after I had written the letter. I opened it and inside was this beautiful, ancient document. It was spine-shivering really, partly because he responded in such a personal way."
McCartney has gone on record stating that the title of the song was inspired partly by the Beatles' Help! co-star Eleanor Bron and got the character's surname of "Rigby" from the British wine merchants, Rigby & Evens.
Shortly after the song's 1966 release on the Beatles' Revolver album, McCartney said, "I was sitting at the piano when I thought of it. The first few bars just came to me, and I got this name in my head -- 'Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church.' I don't know why. I couldn't think of much more so I put it away for a day."
Although fans have been aware of a grave bearing the name Eleanor Rigby in a Liverpool cemetery where McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison used to cut school and sunbathe, author Phillip Norman revealed in his new book John Lennon: The Life that Lennon was particularly fascinated by Rigby's grave throughout his childhood. Mimi Smith, Lennon's aunt who raised him, said that he was thrilled by the epitaph of Rigby -- who was not an elderly spinster, but married and 44 years -- which read simply "Asleep."
Smith recalled that Lennon, who had known death and abandonment throughout his childhood was comforted that, "... it wasn't 'gone forever'... just (to) sleep."
After the Beatles' breakup, both Lennon and McCartney gave separate interviews detailing who wrote what within the duo's partnership. They two agreed on everything except two songs -- Lennon claimed that he wrote the majority of the lyrics to McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" and McCartney claimed that he wrote the melody to Lennon's "In My Life."
In August 1966 :"Eleanor Rigby" was released in the UK as a double A-sided single with "Yellow Submarine." The single went on to top the British charts for four weeks. In the U.S. "Yellow Submarine" was deemed the top side and peaked at Number two, with "Eleanor Rigby:" just missing the Top Ten, going so far as Number 11.
ROD STEWART AND THE FACES TO HOLD REUNION REHEARSAL ON MONDAY …Billboard reports that according to a source from Rod Stewart's camp, Stewart and the Faces will regroup next Monday (November 17th) for a tentative rehearsal. Stewart, Ron Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian MacLagen have not toured since 1975. Stewart's touring bassist will fill in for the band's late original bassist Ronnie Lane.
There have been rumors that the Faces are considering a series of 2009 shows, but the unnamed source said that the rehearsal is "just to check if they can remember the songs . . . nothing is definitive yet."
Over the years Stewart and Wood have worked on a still-to-be released album of original songs called You Strum And I'll Sing.
That’s it for now, as always, if you can’t be good, be good at it and don’t get caught!!!
